The Program
The focus of this week will be debate technique. Debaters will get to practice and fully assimilate the arguments and theories learned from the first session. Additionally, the debaters can focus on specific weaknesses and polish their skills before the beginning of the competitive year. By the end of the week, debaters will have a guaranteed 10 additional rounds of debate. This experience is more advantageous than tournament debate: these debaters have the advantage of having experienced instructors giving valuable advice and guidance in every round. Policy debaters' rounds will use stop-and-go format and rebuttal redos and 3 hours will be scheduled for every round to allow ample time for critiques and stop-and-go debates. Students will be divided into experience levels to guarantee the most challenging rounds for everyone- top debaters will debate other top debaters, and less experienced debaters will likewise debate rounds that will be appropriate for them. In addition to these comprehensively critiqued rounds, debaters will participate in a series of working seminars designed to maximize strategic construction of arguments and frontlines. These seminars will use the same small group format of the debates and will result in effective blocks specific to students' arguments to use during the rounds and in competition during the year.
The Curriculum
Policy debaters will receive 10 fully critiqued stop-and-go rounds. These rounds will be judged by experienced coaches and top college competitors. Since there is an incredible 1-6 staff/student ratio, all debates will take place simultaneously and debaters will be heard by a variety of critics. In addition to rounds, optional daily rebuttal redo sessions are available to ensure maximum improvement. Various elective seminars on theory, strategy, and argument construction will also be offered in addition to the working argument construction seminars. Since it is the last portion of the summer, participants have the benefit of practicing and being coached on a topic that has evolved over the course of the summer institute season. Independent research projects and free time are built into the schedule as well- the atmosphere is more like a graduate seminar or a retreat than a typical debate camp.
Interested debaters ideally should attend the regular policy SNFI as well, but students who have attended an equally rigorous policy program in the summer of 2008 will also be considered.
