The Program
The Stanford National Forensic Institute Three Week program is a comprehensive preparation for the 2008-2009 season of competitive policy debate. The program offers two options for instruction, and is appropriate for any level of experience in policy debate.
The Curriculum
The Core curriculum focuses on preparing students for the upcoming topic and increasing overall debate knowledge through lectures and seminars on the topic and debate theory, directed library and online research, lab sesssions, and expertly critiqued practice debates. This balanced approach is available to students of all levels of experience at a reasonable price, while maintaining the high quality of instruction that SNFI is known for. Special advanced sessions and novice sessions are both available to Core participants. Students will work with each other and the faculty on argument construction to create a core set of evidence available to all SNFI students on paper and disk.
The Accelerated Program provides the same high quality seminars and lectures of the core curriculum, but with an incredible student to staff ratio of 6:1. This ratio allows the Accelerated Program to focus primarily on technique, guaranteeing students tremendous personal attention during argument construction and discussion and allowing the second half of the camp to focus on in-round technique. Accelerated students will debate 20 rounds during the course of the program allowing debaters to hone their technical and strategic capabilities. Accelerated students may also apply to the Swing Lab, a special program within the session, provided they have previously attended at least one debate institute during the summer of 2008. The Swing Lab program is designed to provide a continuation of participants' prior camp experience with an advanced peer group and the finest instructors. Accelerated students will receive all arguments produced at the camp.
Since SNFI is held toward the end of the summer, one big advantage for participants is that we'll have the scoop on what all the other camps in the country have produced. This allows us to help prepare all of our students for those positions that are truly likely to appear at the first tournaments in the fall. Another unique feature of the SNFI is our dedication to providing role models and appropriate supervision for all debaters by striving for gender equity among our instructors - our students deserve no less.
